Getting Your ACT L's

ACT Learners Licence

To obtain your ACT learners licence you must:

  • Be aged of 15 years and 9 months
  • Be a resident of the ACT
  • Have completed the Pre-Learner Licence Program Pre-Learner Program
  • Pass the ACT Road Rules computer based Knowledge Test
  • Visit an Access Canberra Service Centre to apply for the issue of your learner licence.

For Access Canberra to issue you your learners licence, you are required to provide your passed ACT Road Rules Knowledge test Certificate, complete an eyesight test and answer some medical questions. You will be required to provide evidence of your identity and residency and pay the licence fee.

Once you've received your learner licence you are now permitted to drive a car under full supervision. Your supervisor must be someone with a full Australian driver's licence. You must adhere to the special rules for learner drivers.

  • Must clearly display L plates on front and rear of vehicle.
  • Must be supervised at all times by a person with a full Australian driver's licence.
  • Must not exceed a blood alcohol level of 0.00%.
  • Cannot tow more than 750kg GVM.
  • Must obey speed limits.

To obtain your P's

  • If aged under 25, complete 100 hours of supervised driving, including at least 10 hours at night. If aged 25 or older, complete 50 hours of supervised driving, including 5 at night.
  • Hold the learner's licence for 12 months if aged under 25 or 6 months if aged 25 or older.
  • Pass the Hazard Perception Test.
  • Undertake and complete either the Competency Based Training & Assessment or "one-off" Government Driving Test.
